How to Extend the Lifetime of Your Plant

Considering the huge investment your business makes in heavy equipment and plant, it makes sense to get the most use and value out of them. So how can you extend their use and ensure less downtime or pricey repairs?

1: The value of well-trained operators

Skilled operators with deep knowledge about your plant are a key resource to help extend the life of that machinery. They will recognise any issues or faults early and be able to do minor day-to-day maintenance.

Is operator training, including refreshers, part of your preventative maintenance program?

2: Have a maintenance checklist

Create a customised preventative maintenance plan for your business. Use this as a guide for your maintenance checklist, which should include the following practices:

    • Keep machinery clear of any loose debris before and after shifts
    • Check tools are sharp each day, identify worn and damaged tools and replace them.
    • Regularly check machinery fluid levels, air filters, etc and replace them when needed.
3: Keep detailed service records

An equipment maintenance log can be your single source of truth about everything that’s happened to that piece of gear. Ensure it includes: equipment manufacturer, model and serial number; purchase date, and service records. Print copies can be damaged or lost so it is a good idea to use maintenance tracking software to store a digital version.

4: Equipment insurance

Business insurance offers extra protection against risks involving your plant and equipment, including:

    • Material damage loss due to fire, storm, earthquake, malicious acts and theft
    • Damage to third-party property or injury to a member of the public.
    • Unexpected machinery breakdown caused by an electrical, electronic, or mechanical component.
    • Financial loss due to equipment breakdown disrupting your business operations

Policy options include new for old replacement of machines bought new and less than two years old, unspecific attachments, hired-in plant cover. All policies are subject to exclusions, limitations and excesses.
